    San Simeon - Venice

    print this page

    Accommodates 6 — 3 Bedrooms — 2 Baths

We found San Simeon in October 1999. It is as close to perfect, in our opinion, as any accommodation in Venice can be. The neighborhood is Santa Croce, at the head of the Grand Canal, with a good view of the canal itself. This is a true Venetian neighborhood, full of homes lived in and shops and restaurants actually patronized by local people. We absolutely fell in love with the place when we saw it, and we are certain you will, too.

You walk up 3 relatively easy flights to get up to the flat — elevators are so hard to find in Venice, due to the limitations of the architecture. The first thing you notice is how much light there is; the second thing is the quiet. To the right of the entry door is a pleasant living/dining room facing a charming piazza and enjoying views of the Grand Canal. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped. Two bedrooms, one matrimonial and one with joinable twins, share a full bath with shower over tub. Upstairs from the living room, you reach a "loft" area, with a study and a matrimonial bedroom with its own bath (shower only). This lofted area, while low-ceilinged, is one of the flat's most charming features, and the bedroom on this level is, we suspect, the most sought after by guests. Furnishings throughout are comfortable and in extreme good taste without being at all glitzy or flashy. Washing machine, telephone, central air-conditioning, satellite TV and CD player. Housekeeping included at the end of each week; more frequent service available for a fee.

For us, the most important thing about the flat is that you can walk in under 5 minutes to the train station and city parking lots. What does this mean? It means that more than with any other Venetian flat on our list, you can truly use Venice as a base for excursions to the surrounding cities, towns, villages, and countryside. Otherwise, Venice is much more difficult to use as a base, involving a lovely but quite time-consuming vaporetto ride from wherever you are in the city to the train station, even before you can begin your excursion. For this reason alone, the San Simeon flat stands atop all other choices in Venice, in our opinion. Padua, Mantua, Trieste, Lake Garda, Vicenza and the Palladian villas, the Brenta Canal: all become easy, stress-free daytrips from this location.

In addition, walking to the station means all of Venice itself is at your feet since both local and express boats stop here. An even closer vaporetto stop is located at Riva di Biasio for those occasions when you want to enjoy the sybaritic luxury of a slow ride down the Grand Canal. And the price is reasonable, too. What more could you want in a Venice accommodation?
