  • Palazzetto San Lorenzo - Venice

    print this page

We’ve always been enthusiasts of the Venice’s Dorsoduro neighborhood, especially the western part of that neighborhood, characteristic and totally untouristy. Two of our favorite churches in Venice are here: Angelo Raffaele and San Sebastiano. Hereabouts, in a tiny campo, you’ll find our 300-year-old Palazzetto San Lorenzo. Over a period of many years now, the palazzetto’s American owner has succeeded in transforming the second and third floors into charming accommodations which she and her husband occupy part of the year and rent out for the remaining months. This is the owner’s own home, meaning Oriental carpets, fine paintings, antique Venetian mirrors, personal library.  Yet it’s “sturdy” and able adequately to host the number of persons it advertises.

Each floor is an independent flat which can be rented separately or taken together:

Flat 1.  On the second floor, this flat is ideal for three persons, but can sleep up to five.  Floors are Venetian marble throughout, with a 14th-century marble insert at the entrance. There are three rooms: The open kitchen/sitting room, cherrywood and chrome, contains a 19th-century dining table seating 8, plus a single day bed as well; the bedroom has an indivisible matrimonial bed; and the separate studio/office is equipped with a trundle bed (i.e., a twin bed with a second extractable twin bed “nested” beneath). The flat has two full baths.

Flat 2.  Up to the third floor, the “under-the-eaves” mansarda, with wood floors throughout, sleeps a couple comfortably, with room for two guests. The salotto with corner white-marble kitchen, round crystal dining table for six, and vaulted ceiling, has two day beds. The separate bedroom, with en-suite lavender bath, has two twin beds which can be joined to make a matrimonial.  A second full bathroom, in gray mosaic, is across the hall.

So you can see that if, as many groups have done, you were to take both units together — they can be combined by simply opening up doors to the shared hallway — you’ve got a total of three “real” bedrooms for 5-6 adults, four full baths, and three additional day beds. The whole is architect-restored and charmingly and elegantly furnished. Each flat has a phone/fax.  and housekeeping is included twice a week. A trustworthy building manager is available round the clock.

The neighborhood is one of Venice’s most characteristic, with vaporetto about 5-8 minutes’ walk, plus all shops and services, restaurants and wine bars.
