You can pile your coffee table
high with all the agency catalogs you want, but we still say
that there are not more than a dozen houses in all of Italy
which are really suitable for four or five couples travelling
together. In most cases, you are faced with vastly unequal
bedrooms; in other cases, there aren't enough bathrooms, or
the bathrooms are poorly positioned in the house. You absolutely
cannot go by a catalog description which says that such-and-such
a house holds 10 persons. You have to inquire more closely
as to what that really means.
Sernigi is one of the rare dozen.
It really does have five equal bedrooms and five en-suite
bathrooms. Thus, the house is perfect for five couples. It
is also great for two families travelling together or even
three small families. In addition to the five double bedrooms
(three with indivisible king-size beds, two with joinable
twins), there is a charming single bedroom with its own en-suite
bath. (We don't really count a seventh bedroom which is furnished
strictly for small children — not adults —
but which does have its own bath.)
Sernigi is large enough so that
everyone isn't on top of each other. We would guess the house
to be between 6,000 and 7,000 square feet. The ground floor
contains a couple of big reception rooms, plus a separate
dining room and large, fully-equipped kitchen. The kitchen
is brand-new and contains such things as a six-burner restaurant-quality
stove, unusual in an Italian rental house. Also on this level
is a guest half-bath.
The first of the five principal
bedrooms lies on an "in-between" mezzanine level,
while the entire rest of the house is upstairs, on what the
Italians call the first floor. This level contains a spacious,
comfortably furnished double living room which enjoys particularly
nice views over the surrounding countryside. The remainder
of this level is composed of the bedrooms described above.
The house comes equipped with telephone, fax, CD/cassette/tape
player, satellite TV, industrial quality ultrafast dishwasher,
washing machines, 3 mountain bikes, alarm system, and a variety
of other equipment. Daily housecleaning is included, as is
a welcome supper on the evening of arrival. Additional services
such as food shopping, meal preparation, service at table,
personal laundry and ironing, and childcare are available
as extras with advance arrangement.
The location of Sernigi is ideal, lying just about halfway
between Florence and Siena, and just a short distance from
the four-lane highway connecting the two cities. The highway
is close enough for maximum convenience and far enough away
to be completely inaudible. All the Chianti hilltowns are
a short drive away. Two of them, Tavarnelle and San Donato,
are within 5 minutes' drive and have banks, shopping, restaurants,
and post offices. The accommodating owners and their three
small children live in a separate house next door and will
arrange with you convenient hours for their own use of the
pool. They are entirely unobtrusive; yet they are there if
you encounter problems or simply need a restaurant recommendation
or other sightseeing advice.
Prices for free-standing Chianti
villas with their own swimming pools have risen considerably
over the past couple of years. Sernigi is not cheap, but we
can assure you that it is worth every dollar. The property
gets our highest recommendation.
