Two (Strenuous) Weeks in Umbria

Day 1
Arrive and get settled.

Day 2
Orvieto, the medieval section and the cathedral, but also the craft shops.

Day 3
Sansepolcro and Citta di Castello. Get there by taking the little train which plies the Tiber Valley.

Day 4
Todi. Lunch on the terrace at the Ristorante Umbria. Check out the copperware in the craft shops.

Day 5
Spello, with stops in Bevagna, Trevi, and Montefalco. Lunch at the Ristorante Il Molino in Spello.

Day 6
Viterbo, a wonderful medieval city. Plus, plan a couple of hours at Villa Lante, one of Italy's great gardens.

Day 7
Daytrip to Rome by train. Drive the car as far as Orte and park at the station; from Orte, it's 40 minutes to the center of Rome.

Day 8
Southern Umbria, including Amelia (great antique shopping), Narni, and Lugnano in Teverina.

Day 9
Gubbio and, if you're really ambitious, Urbino, a very long daytrip from whatever your base.

Day 10
Spoleto, with a stop at the nearby source of the Clitumnus River, a very beautiful sight.

Day 11
Relax at home after all this!

Day 12
Daytrip to the seaside, either the Adriatic or Mediterranean coast, depending where you're based.

Day 13
Assisi, home of St. Francis, especially the area not around the basilica. Assisi used to be one of our least favorite cities, til we explored its backstreets.

Day 14
Last day - return to one of your favorite places.

Ciao!
